Introduction.
The goal of these role-plays is to help the students learning how to settle certain conflicts amongst you: without either the intervention or the need of adults telling you who or what is right or wrong.
In the role-plays you will find given scenarios and characters (avatars), whose reactions, feelings and needs are similar to the ones you may have as a young person. Young people will meet peers who will encourage them to talk and to help finding a solution to some of your conflicts, through peer mediation.
And now……… let’s see how to become one of the protagonists in the game.

Joining the game. On this website you can choose one of the many different scenarios, and you will find the role-play sessions listed. Since each scenario has a certain given number of players, if the requests exceed the available places, the players will be selected on the basis of their country and the date of the request, thus assuring the presence of players effectively coming from all over Europe.
Some days before the online session (as indicated on the website), each selected player will receive an email containing the user name and password for the log in; after logging in you’ll receive all the information about the avatar (i.e. character) you have to play in the game.

Logging in Open Simulator. Entering Open Simulator and becoming familiar with it is essential before taking part in the game, but don’t worry: you will find all the information about the technical requirements and about OpenSim in the Installation Guide and in the Players’ Guide.
Remember that for the role-play, you’ll enter OpenSim using the user name and password received by email, that identifies the avatar you will be in the scenario.

The scenario: features and contents. In the scenario you will find the description of a certain situation, of the characters involved, and of the place where they are meant to play. Besides this essential information, that is disclosed and shared among all the avatars, each player receives further confidential information about certain aspects of the story (i.e. things only he/she knows) and the description of the features of his/her avatar.
You should play within this framework: keeping in mind all the information you received, especially the confidential details, and embody your character as best you can, like an actor does.
The story told in the scenario has no given end: it’s up to the players. By playing, they can shape a different end in each session.

Playing the game. When playing the game you should remember to embody as best you can your avatar and his/her personality.
During the scenario, any of the characters is at liberty to invite the peer mediator to intervene in the conflict. In any event, if the peer mediator has not been called upon during the session, all players will be invited to take part in a mediation session at the end.

There are few rules we must remember when playing the game:

  • Not using violence during a peer mediation or role play session.
  • When addressing other players, not using offensive expressions or language.
  • When meeting a mediator in the game (one of the other players who proposes you to go through mediation), remember that joining a mediation session is a voluntary process.
  • In the mediation session let the other avatars speak when it’s their turn understanding their reasons; they will do the same.
  • At the end, if an agreement will be reached, an agreement can be written using the OpenSim inventories.

If the game goes on with no character proposing to go through a mediation session and there is no resolution of the conflict, the moderator will propose they all join a mediation session.
